Other Services

Winter Food Baskets & Toys

Thanks to the generosity of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, we distribute food baskets just before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays so families will have enough food to have a meal. We also have a toy drive so each child in the house we distribute the basket to has an appropriate gift.

Utilities and Winter Fuel

We assist with utility bills for those who are in danger of losing their electric, gas, or water service. We can also provide referrals to programs that assist with refillable fuel such as propane, wood, fuel oil, or coal. Decatur Human Services has a $300 cash assistance limit per family in any given 12-month period, but we can coordinate assistance with the Department of Human Services, the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency, Salvation Army, the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo, and the Federal Refillable Fuel Assistance program.

Gasoline

Decatur Human Services provides gasoline vouchers to enable individuals to get to infrequent events such as medical appointments, court appearances, job interviews, and contacts with the Department of Human Services. The amount varies depending on distance and current gasoline prices.

Medications

Emergency assistance can be provided to help cover the cost of medications. This assistance is for short-term needs only and cannot be used on a continuing basis.

Referrals

We work closely with other agencies to ensure that the people we serve are aware of other sources of assistance for needs that we cannot meet.

Federal Food Distribution

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans by providing them with emergency food assistance at no cost. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFAP) provides food to low-income persons at least 60 years of age. This program requires an application to be submitted prior to receiving the food. Decatur Human Services distributes boxes of CSFAP food to qualifying Seniors once per month and the TEFAP boxes to other qualifying households once per quarter. Call us at 269-423-6474 to find out if you are eligible for either of these programs.

Other

We are open to providing assistance in other areas, such as online access to the Department of Human Services as well as Michigan Works and other employment resources, to the extent of our ability.
